By carrying out scientific work in parallel at three different faculties and schools of ophthalmology, Dr. Cusumano has been able to apply the most advanced clinical and surgical research from all over the world.

Prof. Dr. med. Andrea Cusumano, a researcher in ophthalmology at the Universitá di Roma Tor Vergata, has a rich international background. Dr. Cusumano is Professor of Ophthalmology at Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn ( Germany), Adjunct Associate Professor at Cornell University, Weill Medical College in New York ( U.S.), and Founder and President of the Scientific Committee of the German-Italian Foundation DISAHF for ophthalmo-neurological research, a co-Foundation of the Alexander Von Humboldt-Stiftung ( Germany).

Dr. Cusumano’s primary focus is applying innovative ophthalmalogical techniques – using laser technology, ultrasound, new biomaterials and intraocular endoscopic techniques. He has taken part in the development of numerous clinical, diagnostic, and surgical innovations, which have advanced the field of ophthalmology as a whole.

Dr. Cusumano spends about half of his time on research and participation in non-profit scientific foundations. He participates in numerous inter-university science and healthcare programs, focusing on European Union accords and international cooperation.

Dr. Cusumano is passionate about his research and teaching. For several years, he has been instructing clinical and surgical courses for European and North American ophthalmologists.

A firm believer in bringing telecommunications into the medical world, Dr. Cusumano is keen on teleconferencing and teleconsulting to provide patients with the best possible diagnosis and planning, regardless of their geographic location or local resources.

Dr. Cusumano likes to think of his philosophy as German discipline, American management, and Italian style. His dream and lifelong project is to create an ophthalmological center in Italy open to experts from around the world, where a new generation of ophthalmologists can combine expertise and focus on improving patient care.

Born in Rome in 1958, Dr. Cusumano has been married since 1988 and has three daughters, each one born in different country where Dr. Cusumano has worked; Maria Vittoria in Bonn, Federica in Rome, and Caterina in New York.
